Marram grass on the dunes near Oostkapelle

The surroundings

Two nature reserves, four towns and the sea, all within a quarter of an hour.

Walcheren

An island where you will never be bored

Walcheren has the most hours of sunshine in the Netherlands and beautiful wide, clean beaches. Besides the beach there are many cycle paths crossing all sorts of charming villages. A ride across the island gives a fine view of the highest dunes in the country.

Oostkapelle is surrounded by two nature reserves of national importance: De Manteling and Oranjezon.

Oostkapelle

The village around the corner

Oostkapelle is one of the larger villages in the municipality of Veere. This characterful, child-friendly village lies behind the dyke, with a lively centre a ten-minute walk from Het Zeeuws Meisje. There is a large supermarket, a baker, a butcher, several clothing shops and plenty of restaurants.

Well worth a visit is the biodynamic farm shop of Loverendale Ter Linde, with a full range of organic vegetables, fruit and dairy. They bake fresh sourdough bread daily and make the best croissants in Zeeland.

Nature

De Manteling and Oranjezon

De Manteling is an old estate woodland with beech avenues running straight to the beach. With a bit of luck you will spot fallow deer. A walk to Domburg along the beach or through the dunes comes highly recommended.

Towns and villages

Domburg, Veere and Middelburg

Fashionable, always lively Domburg is five kilometres away. It is the oldest seaside resort on Walcheren; in the early twentieth century artists such as Piet Mondriaan and Jan Toorop came here for inspiration. Veere was once a powerful trading city and is now a picturesque town on the Veerse Meer. Middelburg is the lively provincial capital with a striking town hall.
